The Dyson Airwrap: Long Hair, Tips for Longevity, and Styles

The Dyson Airwrap is a highly controversial hairstyling multitool as it is quite costly (749.99 CAD) and have had mixed reviews on its effectiveness. I’ve had the Dyson Airwrap for about 3 years now, so here’s my review. I have fine, straight hair, that usually tends to lose curls quickly.

Initial Look

Initially when I got the Dyson Airwrap, I had long virgin hair, about down to my tailbone with no layers. Using the smaller curling barrels, I was able to curl my hair in approximately an hour. I did dry my hair to about 80% with the regular drying tool. I also used a strong-holding mousse, and hairspray afterwards. I held the curls on the barrel for longer than the advised time (15 secs/till dry), with approximately 10 seconds of cool air to set the curls. Unfortunately, these curls would always fall flat after about 3 hours, leaving me with product-filled straightish hair with only the very ends slightly curled. As one can imagine, this was highly unpleasant and therefore I did not end up using the tool often. Additionally, using the bigger barrels resulted in my curls dropping quicker.

One way to increase longevity I found with my curls was to first use the smoothening brush (the one with no ball-bristled tips) to dry my hair till it was almost completely dry. To me, almost completely dry would mean that a lot of my hair was dry, with some slightly damp strands/ends and completely dry roots. Then, I would spritz my hair with either leave-in conditioner or texturizing spray to add some grip. After that, I would then proceed to use the smaller barrels to curl my hair. This method would allow me to have curls for most of the day as long as outdoor conditions were good (no rain, not too hot). To further increase the longevity of these curls, using bobby pins afterwards to pin up the recently curled hair helped a lot to keep the curls looking good and lasting all-day. The image on the left shows what my hair looked like after taking out the pin curls, compared to regular curling with the Dyson on the right.

Sleeping on the Dyson curls after the previous effort was also a reason why my curls were slipping overnight, as ideally the curls would last for a few days. I found that using some type of way to keep the hair curled overnight was highly effective. Depending on personal preference, this could be using hair clips/bobby pins, (first spin the hair around in the pattern of curling, then pin it to the top of your head to prevent any discomfort while sleeping) the more hair clips/bobby pins you use, the better you’ll be able to get tighter sections of curls, I would typically use two claw clips, parting my hair down the middle.

Tips

To get highly long-lasting curls for multiple days with long hair, I highly recommend doing using the Dyson barrel tool right before bed, and using bobby pins to pin up each curl to your head. Then spraying with hairspray overtop. Using a shower cap or a hair bonnet can be put overtop to prevent any pins from getting loose. In the morning, you should have very beautiful curls that last for a few days, especially if you continue to pin them up at night with a hair clip. I have to say, when my hair did work with the Dyson, the results were gorgeous.

Although the curling barrels were not ideal for my long, fine hair, other tools in the kit were quite useful. For example, the hair drying tool was very efficient at drying my hair quickly, only taking approximately 20 mins on medium high heat. I do like how you can control the air pressure (light, medium, strong) and heat (high heat, medium heat, and cold). In addition, the smoothening tool created really shiny smooth hair that lasted me for at least 3 days.

Overall, I think that if you have the money to buy the Dyson Airwrap, it is a worthy investment, once you get the hang of using each tool and the correct products for your hair type. However, if you’re just looking to get bouncy curls and are on the fence about the Dyson, I do think there are easier and more affordable options such as using a curling iron or straightener.
